Amazing Grace

Jump to lyricsThe UK and thus the US, Canada, New Zealand and Australia, all have Christianity interwoven in the culture, and Christian ideas and language feature heavily. Just as someone coming to Japan would find many things confusing if they didn't know some basics about Shinto and Buddhism, the same is true for English language and culture with Christianity. Christianity has had a heavy influence on art, and music is no exception.
"Amazing Grace" is a Christian hymn published in 1779 by the English clergyman John Newton. There are many lovely versions of this song, and if you watch English language drama, from the US in particular, then you will definitely hear it at some point.
Christian culture puts a strong emphasis on redemption. It is framed in the context of having one life, and at the end of it you will either go to Heaven or to Hell, and that is for eternity, no second chances! The second chance comes in life, and if you can turn your heart to good then God will forgive you and you will go to Heaven.
Out of the countries mentioned above, the United States has the strongest Christian culture, and themes of redemption feature prominently in drama. Many films will have a "redemption arc":
A Christmas Carol - Ebenezer Scrooge is a mean, miserly man who is visited by ghosts who force him to reflect on his life, at which point he changes his heart and is redeemed. Everyone in the UK knows this story, it has been made and remade many times with different takes on the story. I particularly like The Muppet Christmas Carol, and Scrooged.
Spider-Man: No Way Home - Several villains confront past harm and earn a second chance. The character of Spider-Man is essentially one of redemption, after his inaction leads to his uncle's death, he is haunted by guilt and the constant attempts to redeem himself as he struggles to do good as those around him doubt him.
Good Will Hunting - The main character struggles with his own past and his genius, and through the course of the film confronts his demons and comes to a point of self acceptance.
Les Misérables - a French story, (like most of Europe, France is also a Christian culture), that features the story of a criminal who becomes renowned for his virtue after an act of kindness.
You may have noticed that even my descriptions of the films naturally use Christian words and phrases - confronts his demons; visited by ghosts; haunted by guilt. It underlines how important it is to have some understanding of Christianity in order to understand English and English culture.
Amazing Grace carries the message that forgiveness and redemption are possible regardless of the sins people commit and that the soul can be delivered from despair through the mercy of God. It is among the most sung and recorded hymns in the world and is especially popular in the United States, where it is used for both religious and secular purposes.
Newton wrote the words from personal experience. I would say that most people only know the first verse.
Notes
補足
In the song, note words like 'twas and 'tis. They are contractions. Not only do they help make the words fit the rhythm, they are from an older style of English, one often used with Christianity, so they signal to a native speaker that this is English from the past, and possibly religious, even without hearing any of the actual content.
この歌の中で、'twas(= it was)や 'tis(= it is)といった語に注目してください。
Also, note that this kind of older English can sometimes have a similar structure to Japanese, with the verb coming at the end of the sentence. This still happens in music, so it might feel more natural for you to read.
Amazing grace! How sweet the sound
Grace (in Christian belief) is the free and unmerited favour of God, as manifested in the salvation of sinners and the bestowal of blessings.
That saved a wretch like me!
The word wretch means an unfortunate or unhappy person, but also a despicable or contemptible person. Its origins are in Old English wrecca, which means banished person, and that has the perfect sense for this song, as the main character will be banished from Heaven until they are redeemed.
I once was lost, but now am found;
Was blind, but now I see.
’Twas grace that taught my heart to fear,
And grace my fears relieved;
How precious did that grace appear
The hour I first believed.
Through many dangers, toils, and snares,
I have already come;
’Tis grace hath brought me safe thus far,
And grace will lead me home.
The Lord has promised good to me,
His Word my hope secures;
He will my Shield and Portion be,
As long as life endures.
Yea, when this flesh and heart shall fail,
And mortal life shall cease,
I shall possess, within the veil,
A life of joy and peace.
The earth shall soon dissolve like snow,
The sun forbear to shine;
But God, who called me here below,
Will be forever mine.
When we’ve been there ten thousand years,
Bright shining as the sun,
We’ve no less days to sing God’s praise
Than when we’d first begun.
